Metro Tunnel (NORTH) ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT

The largest archaeological dig in Victorian history took place in the heart of the CBD as part of the Metro Tunnel Project.

The Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project commenced in 2018 at two city locations. The excavations uncovered archaeological remains and thousands of artefacts from the city’s rich history. Some artefacts date back more than 180 years to the early days of European settlement in Melbourne.

In early 2020, ArchLink was engaged by Andrew Long & Associates to undertake the cataloguing, analysis and reporting of the artefact assemblage recovered from the Metro North site.

For this large-scale artefact analysis project ArchLink engaged additional artefact specialists; Zvonka Stanin, Natalie Paynter and Felicity Buckingham and Anthony Bagshaw.
